Gina Marie Photography | What to Expect

Newborn sessions are for infants no more then 14 days new.  The best time to photograph is between 5 and 10 days after birth.

Why so soon?  Newborns are only so little for a very short time, right after birth they are very sleepy and they enjoy being curled up just as they were in your womb.  After a couple weeks they become more alert and all of the details that make them newborn rapidly disappear, they change every day. We want to capture all those details and create the sweetest images for you to cherish for many years to come.

Could you still take pictures if your baby is past two weeks?  Of course, but we don't recommend having a session with babies older then two weeks, unless of course there are special circumstances such as a NICU stay. Older babies are awake more and much more alert, therefore they won't go into those precious poses that you see on our website. Even at a few months sessions are usually filled with flailing arms and uncooperative babes. The next milestone we recommend would be 6 months or sitting up.

When should you book? It's never too soon to inquire about your newborn session, but be sure to contact Gina sometime in your second trimester so we know when to expect you. We'll pencil you in on your due date, and when baby arrives, let us know as soon possible so we can set up a date and time for your session.

Sessions can last up to 3 hours so plan accordingly. We will take lots of breaks for feeding and soothing. During the session we want you to sit back and relax so I will be doing majority of the work. I am extremely patient so don't worry if baby isn't cooperating or if they take a while to feed or pose, they run the show.  Newborns are usually down to their birthday suit for majority of the session so the studio is kept nice and warm to keep them comfortable. Accidents are expected and almost always happen so bring extra wipes and diapers and I'll have several blankets to change over to if need be.

Can parents or siblings participate in a few photos? Of course! If you're wondering what to wear, keep it simple. Moms can wear a solid color tank, t-shirt, or tube top. Black or white usually looks best. Dads can wear a solid t-shirt or if you're comfortable bearing your chest, great! That makes for some beautifully tender images.

Please contact us if you have any other questions about your session.  We look forward to working with you and your new baby.
